MJM34z Express: Fuel-Conscious Pocket Cruiser

With lightweight construction and a single diesel, this classic-looking New England-style vessel cruises at a decent clip without devouring fuel. The price is steep for a 34-footer, however.

After reading last November’s "Gotta Be a Better Way" editorial that challenged the marine industry to build more fuel-efficient powerboats, the founder of MJM Yachts, Bob Johnstone, sent PBR editor Chris Landry this email:

"Hey Chris, How come we didn’t get a mention in your editorial? We may be the only real boat currently being built that gets 2-3 miles per gallon at 29 mph (25 knots). The key is horsepower-to-weight ratio. We’ve ‘gotta better way.’ How about some coverage?"


The MJM34z Express, with its relatively narrow hull and well-placed deadrise, delivered a soft 20-knot ride in 3-foot seas during our sea trial.
Johnstone’s boat, the MJM34z, sounded like an attractive alternative to the fuel hogs that flood the market. We tested it at the Miami Boat Show in February. …
