Boat Show Blunders: Meridian, Shamrock, Luhrs, Tiara Falter

The marine industry often fails to present recreational craft in tip-top condition at boat shows. This photo essay is the first in a two-part report that points the finger at the worst offenders.


The first step into the cabin on the $759,000 Luhrs 41 Open is actually part of the galley’s Corian counter. This is a safety concern, in our view, because the Corian will become slick if wiped down with a wet sponge or stepped on with wet feet. In addition, a removable lid that leads to a garbage bucket is integral to this section of counter. Someone could step down into the hole (see inset) if the lid is left off. Lastly, feet and food don’t mix.
If you’re shopping for a $60,000 automobile, you likely will not encounter a car with a puddle of oil beneath the engine, or tires low on air, or a glove box door that won’t shut properly. Such blunders in quality control and showmanship are nonexistent in the high-end car market. But on expensive boats and yachts, they’re all too common, in our opinion.
