Nike Tops Base-Layer Garments

Helly Hansen, Musto, and Victory also earn kudos for performance & comfort.


After literally putting these shirts through the wringer, we were surprised to find relative landlubber Nike (fourth from left) finish at the top of the hamper. Reasonably priced, it scored well in all of our tests.
Coast Guard statistics tell us that recreational boaters face the highest risk of dying in boating accidents during the winter months. The primary cause of this is hypothermia. For protection from cold temperatures, the Coast Guard and the majority of garment manufacturers recommend layered clothing. And layering starts with products that rest against the skin, which the sports garment industry has dubbed “base-layer garments.” Not only do these second-skin layers conserve a bit of body heat, they act as a barrier against sun, wind, and body chafing.
