Your First Fly Rod

Taking the plunge into flyfishing? You’ll need a rod that is reasonably priced and sized for a variety of species—something that’ll catch a jack crevalle, trout, or dolphin (pictured below) with equal prowess. We’d choose a 9-wt. flyrod to fit this bill. It affords good castability for a beginner, especially when loaded with an intermediate sink fly line, and enough backbone to fight brawny saltwater predators.
