Your First Fly Rod
Best Buy: the $149 rod from Temple Creek Outfitters.
Taking the plunge into flyfishing? Youll need a rod that is reasonably priced and sized for a variety of speciessomething thatll catch a jack crevalle, trout, or dolphin (pictured below) with equal prowess. Wed choose a 9-wt. flyrod to fit this bill. It affords good castability for a beginner, especially when loaded with an intermediate sink fly line, and enough backbone to fight brawny saltwater predators. We looked at five of these middleweights, one each from Gold Cup (Bass Pro), Redington, Sage, St. Croix, and Temple Fork Outfitters. Prices ranged from $150 to $200.
