Outboard Shoot-Out

On big, fast planing platforms like the Twin Vee 36, we’d take the Suzuki DF250 over the Mercury Verado 250.


At higher speeds, the Suzuki-powered vessel gets better mileage than the Mercury-powered boat. The Mercury boat is quieter, but at such high speeds wind noise often overtakes engine noise.
Engine selection involves many variables. The most important, no doubt, are the boat’s size, style, and intended use. In last month’s propulsion shoot-out of 250-hp outboards, the testing platforms were identical 23-foot center consoles with single engines. (Mercury Verado vs. Yamaha four-stroke vs. Evinrude E-TEC two-stroke). The super-charged Verado burned more fuel than the other engines at higher speeds, but held its own in the mileage and range departments at 35 mph, which is plenty fast for such a small boat. This cruise-speed economy, along with its quiet operation and power steering, allowed the Verado to best the Yamaha and the Evinrude. …
