Northstar 6000i Network: Easy to Use, but Pricey
The Northstar 6000i’s sounder and overall user interface were rated excellent. But its stiff system price tag and screen fogging hold it back. The Furuno is still our top choice.

|
Networked systems like the Northstar 6000i represent the best the marine electronics world has to offer. Sounder, plotter, radar, and video data can be displayed on any screen in the network. On our test boat, we have 8.4- and 10.4-inch screens.

The networked marine electronics field is starting to get crowded. Furuno issued the challenge in February of 2001 when it introduced the NavNet 1 system. Since then, Furuno has moved to the vx2 incarnation of its NavNet system, while another early player, Raymarine, is on its third network language, SEATALK-HS. In the last couple of years, two veteran marine electronics makers, Garmin and Northstar, introduced their own marine networks. Weve reviewed Furuno, Raymarine, and Garmin before; now we look at our fourth player, Northstar and its 6000i network system. We take an initial look and compare it to others already on the market.
