E-TEC Powerhead Checks Out; Fuel Line Cited as the Culprit

Bombardier technicians solved the knocking problem on the port engine of our Twin Vee test boat. They say it was caused by a fuel restriction—but the boatbuilder doesn’t buy it.


A pair of 90-hp E-TECs are mounted on a PBR test boat, a Twin Vee Awesome 22 catamaran. The boat has been off the water for a total of three weeks due to the port engine’s rough running at idle. The boatbuilder and the engine maker are laying the blame on each other.
One of the 90-hp Evinrude E-TEC outboards that PBR is long-term testing is running smoothly again, but the path to its good health has been a rough one. The engine maker, Bombardier, has pointed the finger at the boatbuilder that rigged the engines, saying that a kinked, inferior fuel line led to its previous rough running. In response, the builder, Twin Vee Catamarans of Fort Pierce, FL, has disputed Bombardier’s claim and stated it has ended its business relationship with Bombardier. …
