Evinrude E-TEC

The evolution of the two-stroke reaches the next level with Bombardier’s turn-key E-TEC. It requires no break-in, winterizes itself and can run 300 hours before the first service call.


We tested a 90-hp E-TEC on the Ranger 169 Ghost saltwater flats boat. PBR fuel-burn, speed and range data was very similar to Bombardier’s. Our higher WOT noise level (104 dB compared to 97 dB) may have been attributable to windy test conditions.
Bombardier fixed the Ficht but still wants you to forget about it. The word still conjures the stench of blown powerheads, so we can’t blame Bombardier for axing the moniker from its current direct injection two-stroke lineup. The Ficht engine will truly be gone when Bombardier completes the replacement of all of its Fichts with the new E-TEC two-strokes. As of press time, the engine maker was offering E-TEC engines up to 90 hp. PBR tested a 90-hp E-TEC on a Ranger 169 Ghost flats boat. …
