Battery Trays and Boxes

Secure trays from West and Gil beat the cheaper battery boxes.


The battery boxes from West Marine and Tempo do the job, but the two trays from West and Gil (center) hold batteries more securely and don’t block access. The tray in the foreground, the T & H, secures its battery with a single strap.
When kingfish pros slam their boats through 3- to 4-footers at 40 knots, you can rest assured their batteries are securely held in place with either a battery box or tray. Just imagine a 50-pound battery smashing around in the bilge. The word “destruction” comes to mind (damaged through-hull fittings, gouged fiberglass and a bilge awash in acid). Most recreational boaters won’t be doing 40 knots, but there’s enough rockin’ and a rollin’ aboard any boat—even at anchor—to warrant the best battery hold-down systems. …
