Hatches Made In Heaven?

The hatches and lockers on a boat often serve as indicators of vessel quality on the whole. Which builders have God on their sides, and which claim the devil made them do it?

When we step aboard a boat to begin an inspection, one of the first things we do is open a few topside hatches and lockers. Fishboxes, anchor lockers, access ports … they all speak to us. Almost like that little tub of Parkay margarine, they blurt out: “price-boat,” or “high-end.” Seriously, hatches many times foreshadow what we’ll find on the rest of the boat. Check them out at the next boat show you attend.

We look for attention to detail, high-grade stainless steel hardware, and meticulous fit and finish. We ask these questions: Are the hatch lids held down tightly with positive-locking latches? Is there rubber gasketing around the underside of…
