Equipped to Fish

When it comes to fishing boats, it seems like more and more boatbuilders have their lines in the water. But just because a builder labels a boat “Tournament Edition” doesn’t mean its fishing features are up to snuff. We identify the real players—and the posers.

Most recreational boats marketed to fishermen come with the essential tools of the trade: rod holders, baitwells, fishboxes and tackle storage. But it’s the quality and quantity of these components—and the thoughtfulness of their installations—that separate the serious fish boat from the mediocre one.

This winter we visited a handful of south Florida dealers and photographed boats from nine different manufacturers. We found an interesting mix. Some boats relied on fancy names and aggressive marketing. One model was dubbed “Tournament Edition” but had some of the most sub par fishing equipment we’ve ever seen. Other vessels let their simple layouts and proper placement of fishing equipment make a statement. …
