Boston Whalers: Expensive,
But Good Values

Whaler owners give their boats a 94% satisfaction rating, the highest of any used boat we've surveyed. Still, interior accommodations could be improved, and some readers are unhappy about the Mercury-only propulsion.


Whaler models have become too "all-around"
ûfor some readers. The 230 Outrage gives more
ûobvious fishing amenities, including two in-
ûdeck fishboxes with pumpouts, multiple rod
ûholders and stainless toe rails.

Given the enthusiastic response we got last time we surveyed Boston Whaler owners (December 1997), we weren’t surprised that these familiar, time-tested boats received yet another rousing vote of approval from readers in our most recent poll. Which isn’t to say that there are not some problem areas that owners are quick to point to, and to which the company might pay some attention. But overall, Whaler owners love their ‘tubs,’ despite some quirks, for the same reasons they always have—solidity, stability and versatility. …
