Varnish Exposure Finale

Epifanes Wood Finish, Pettit’s Hi-Build 2056 and West Marine’s Skipper come out on top after our 2-year test.


After two years of constant exposure, the frame is
ûgetting rickety, but the teak is sound, as are about
ûa quarter of the varnish applications.

Time once again, folks, for a report on Powerboat Reports' varnish exposure test. After 2 years, we're getting somewhere. In fact, for practical purposes, it's over.

While we’ve tested other wood finishes that lasted considerably longer than varnish—see PBR  July 2001—these were either matte-finish pigmented stains or glossy two-component polymerizing systems. Recognizing that there are a lot of purists out there who prefer to work with traditional varnish, we decided to run exposure tests on these familiar one-component clear coatings. …
