Foredecks

Grippy non-skid, wide sidedecks, high bowrails and plenty of handrails should combine to offer safe passage to and from the ground tackle and cleats. We highlight some boats that get the job done and others that need some changes.


To go forward on this 1999 Maxum 2800 SCR, you
walk through its windshield to a cambered fore-
ūdeck (top) that leads to a measley 3'-wide sidedeck
and a 18-1/2"-high rail (above left); you could
lose your balance here and your leg could become
trapped between the rail and foredeck (above
right).

The foredeck is a very important part of the boat. We use it as a pathway to and from the bow, where we handle dock lines and ground tackle; it's the best place to post a lookout in poor visibility; we fish from the foredeck; and we may even lie down or lounge here to catch a few rays. All these purposes, which must be carefully considered in the design phase to ensure a functional and safe boat, often end up competing. …
