To be safe, a cockpit's sole needs to be grippy, its coaming thigh-high, and its scuppers and hoses should drain the water out of the boat quickly. We identify boats that get the job done and, of course, those that fall short.

When the term cockpit is used, some think of big sportfishing boat cockpits with transom doors for hauling in tuna, bait prep stations with a livewell, tackle drawers, a sink, and even a freezer, rod and gaff holders, and anything else needed to land the big one. But most boats have cockpits.
