After Sputtering, Leaky Break-in, Suzuki 90s Humming Along

Twin four-strokes earn a B+ in the first report of our season-long durability test. A leaking trim motor on one engine and a few hours of rough running with the other detract from solid performance.


The 90s pushed our 22' test platform to 27 mph
ûat 4500 rpm, where they got 2.5 mpg.

We’ve stepped up our efforts over the past year to test engines not only for performance, but also durability. Let’s face it, just about every new engine performs very nicely during press introductions. A motor’s true colors only begin to show after 100 hours.

We ain’t babying these things, either. They're being run hard at varying speeds, with different loads and in just about every type of weather condition.

Right now, we have four motors in our possession—a 150-hp Evinrude Ficht and a 130-hp Honda (taking turns on our 21' walkaround) and a pair of Suzuki 90-hp four-strokes. …
