Monohull Dusky 233 Surprises CatCraft 230

Cats run smoother than monohulls, right? Wrong. The monohull Dusky pounded less and kept us drier. The CatCraft gives you more standard options and better fit and finish. It's also $8,000 more.


The Dusky 233 wasn't as quick out of the
hole as the CatCraft 230 but its V bottom dug
in nicely in Miami's 2' chop. The cat pounded
in similar conditions.

To pound or not to pound ... that is the question—if you're a powerboater who needs to travel long distances to reach the fishing grounds. In our experience, catamarans have always delivered a smoother ride than monohulls of the same length. But there's been an upset.

The Dusky 233 monohull kept pounding to a minimum (the windshield was almost dry), while a 2-foot chop seemed to manhandle its twin-hulled competitor, the CatCraft 230. The cat has a lot going for it, however: high-end construction, excellent fit and finish and a respectable list of standard features. Would these attributes be enough to make us forget about our rough ride, though? …
